Teaching Gratitude to Our Children

It’s no secret or misinformation that we live in a world where our children are often over-indulged; where they want our presents more than our presence but really need our presence more.

We use things merely as the place value in our life, without being grateful enough; and unfortunately even as parents, we forget that the most important thing we can do for our children is to model the kinds of behavior we wish for them to have.

While there are no set in stone rules, hidden formulas or manual on how to best portray an attitude of gratitude; I have found the following the be most effective:

1) Pray and give thanks to the Almighty for everything you have. This reminds your children (and yourself) that everything we have is a gift from the Creator.

2) Reflect on the things you are grateful for. One of the best ways to reflect is through drawing/writing or some other form of expression. This Gratitude and Dream journal is the most beautiful I have come across. The quotations, inspirations and writing prompts provide the perfect space for you to express yourself as well as introspectively seek and appreciate the beauty and wonder of everything in your life. The pages are bright and bold and evoke a sense of spiritual awakening and positivity.

3) Practice. Listen up parents, you can’t tell your children to be happy and grateful and then they hear you grumble all the time…so be wary of practicing what you preach so that they can follow in your footsteps and emulate your behavior and attitude. Gratitude and a sense of contentment can be contagious and create a ripple effect…so ensure that you are fostering an environment conducive to this.
