Positive Reinforcement| Offering Rewards

In our home, I have found that the best way to derive desired or favorable behavior is by offering rewards. Wait, no i don’t necessarily mean a toy or another material object. I have found a variety of rewards are key to keeping children motivated over a long period of time. They are especially effective when the child feels that he/she has a voice and can choose something that appeases them.

That being said, I would like to encourage you to be very cautious not to replace encouraging words with a mere reward but offer lots of praise, touch, hugs and positive words along the way.

Check out the following suggestions which are a few that we implement at a pre-school level; however, most times I can get my 8 and 6 year old to work hard for these same rewards 😉

Reward Options:

  • Going to the park
  • Play-date with friends
  • Listening to a story
  • Playing outside
  • Playing a computer game
  • Going swimming
  • Ordering pizza and watching a movie
  • Playing board games of their choice
  • Going out for ice cream or other dessert of their choice
  • Painting (finger or brushes)
  • Suprizanimals– Yes, I throw these in when desired behavior is reached after a couple weeks. The surprise of not knowing what is inside the ball adds that extra notion of fun! My kids love these little animals, which they treat as baby pets. Its hard to resist doing that especially when they come with a name and birth date. 🙂

Great list of ideas, now that my boy is 4, we always get him to do things by offering a reward, usually letting him look at bus photos on my laptop (yes really!), or a kinder joy egg. I might check out these Suprizanimals, he might like them #MarvMondays

  3. Great post, we are currently trying a few of these things with our little one. I definitely find them a better reward than a toy or something material. I havent come across Suprizimans before, but can imagine my little one might like them. Perhaps an extra special reward or treat 😉 Thanks for sharing this on #MarvMondays. Emily

    1. Emily, I think children appreciate them much more. They value our presence over our presents most of the time! Thanks for coming over xo
